Weatherproof Wedding Tips: A Rain Plan for Your Big Day

by Oct 31, 2019Weather, Wedding Planning

It’s long been a superstition that rain on your wedding day signifies bad luck. Or good luck, depending on which ancient tradition you consult. Regardless, a stormy wedding day calls for some special preparations. Since North Texas weather is especially fickle this time of year, your friends at Hidden Creek Events have come up with a list of things to do to make sure your wedding goes according to plan, rain or shine!

Track the Forecast.

This is one of the most important things you can to do be ready for whatever your big day holds. Keep an eye on the forecast for your venue’s location. Sign up for severe weather alerts, put a weather app on your phone’s home screen, and have a backup plan ready to deploy with little notice; forecasts are most accurate within 10 days of the big event.

Weatherproof Your Makeup and Hair.

Since seasonal storms usually bring wind and rain, you’ll need to take some extra time to protect your hair and makeup. Keep plenty of heavy-duty hairspray on hand for you and your bridesmaids, as well as bobby pins to keep updos secure. Use waterproof cosmetics to keep your makeup from running in photos and during the ceremony.

Wear All-Weather Footwear.

Rain equals mud, which doesn’t go well with high heels. Keep some low-heeled options on hand for your wedding party so you don’t sink into the soft earth with every step. Or choose a venue like Hidden Creek that has outdoor artificial turf that looks like natural grass.

Have Umbrellas on Hand.

A rainy day could actually give you a cute photo-op with your wedding party and guests all holding umbrellas in your wedding colors. You could make inexpensive umbrellas available for all your guests as favors. If you’d rather not preserve memories of the inclement weather, simply send a reminder that guests should bring their own umbrellas to be on the safe side.

Rent a Party Tent.

If your venue has the space, a party tent setup could keep everyone dry during the ceremony and reception. DFW has plenty of tent vendors to choose from. You can rent anything from a 10’x10’ canopy to an 80’ frame tent with window walls. Most vendors provide professional setup and extras like mood lighting, tables and chairs, and linens.

Have a Plan B.

Everyone needs a backup plan in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. If tents aren’t your thing, find a venue that can quickly bring an outdoor ceremony and reception indoors. Hidden Creek has a lovely outdoor ceremony spot, but we can bring the party into our barn reception area that sits just a few dozen feet away. This provides a convenient rain plan with minimal disruption.
